Prickly Pear Cactus | Succulent Saturday

Today we are talking about a very popular and diverse Cactus, the Prickly Pear Cactus. Some varieties actually grow wild in Texas and you can see them all over the state. This one of the few cacti that can withstand temperatures below freezing as well as extreme heat. They are drought tolerant and low maintenance. Pretty much the perfect cactus.

Light: These cacti prefer full sun but can tolerate bright indirect sunlight. They prefer to be outside.

Water: Let this plant dry out before watering again. Ideally every two weeks or so. After its first year, this plant can be sustained by just rain water with supplemental water during droughts. In the winter you can cut back to once a month AT THE MOST. If its outside do not water in freezing temps.

Temperatures: These plants prefer warmer temperatures but can survive in freezing temps.

Fertilizer: Fertilize in the spring and summer months.

Repotting: Repot only when the roots grow out of the drainage hole or when the plant is too big for its pot.

Toxicity: This plant is not toxic to humans or pets however keep it away from pets and children as it is super pokey!
